      The Course

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is widely regarded as one of the world’s most scenic city marathons. Starting near Cape Town Stadium in Green Point, the route showcases the city’s iconic landmarks, taking runners along the Atlantic Seaboard, through vibrant neighbourhoods, and beneath the backdrop of Table Mountain. The course is known for being relatively fast and flat, making it suitable for both first-time marathoners and those chasing a personal best.

With spectacular ocean views, enthusiastic local support, and a world-class race atmosphere, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon offers a truly unforgettable marathon experience. As Africa’s first Abbott World Marathon Major, it has firmly established itself as one of the most sought-after races on the global running calendar.

      The Temperature

Cape Town enjoys mild autumn conditions in May, providing excellent weather for marathon running. Temperatures on race morning are typically cool, ranging from 12°C to 15°C (54°F to 59°F), before warming to around 18°C to 22°C (64°F to 72°F) later in the day. Runners can generally expect dry conditions, light coastal breezes, and comfortable racing temperatures.

Tip: Train in a variety of conditions where possible and be prepared for cooler temperatures at the start, particularly if you’re travelling from a warmer climate. Layering before the race and discarding outer clothing at the start can help ensure comfort.

      Entry Fee

Guaranteed entry is available at an additional cost when booked with our package.

      Qualification Requirements

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is open to runners aged 20 years or older on race day. No qualifying time is required for general marathon entry, making the event accessible to both first time marathoners and experienced runners alike.

      Time Limit

Participants have 6 hours 30 minutes to complete the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon. The course is designed to accommodate a wide range of abilities, from elite athletes to first time marathon runners, while ensuring all participants finish within the official race cut-off time.
